Design Steam capsule art that reads at shelf size.

A capsule is often the first thing a player notices. Indiely Capsule Studio helps you arrange artwork, keep text legible and preview the composition in supported Steam formats before you export.

A practical artwork workflow

Build one visual idea, then check each format.

Capsules do different jobs across the store, library and recommendation shelf. A layout that looks clear at full size may turn into an unreadable block when the card shrinks. The studio puts these contexts close to the editor.

Start with the image

Upload artwork you have permission to use, position the focal subject and control the crop. Keep important faces, symbols and text away from edges that become easy to lose in smaller formats.

Review the hierarchy

Use color, contrast and space to make the game title and visual hook work together. If every element asks for attention, remove details until the idea reads quickly at thumbnail size.

Check shelf context

Preview the capsule next to other game art. Similar colors or compositions can make an otherwise polished image disappear. Adjust the silhouette or contrast and compare again.

Export every supported format for free.

Indiely's free core includes all supported store and library formats, individual PNG downloads and ZIP exports without watermarks. Create projects without a plan-based limit, prepare your capsule art and continue with the free launch checklist or press kit.

The editor applies the correct canvas for each format, and our Steam capsule sizes guide lists every store and library dimension. Your final upload still needs a review against the current Steamworks rules: a clean export does not mean Valve has approved the asset.

Use feedback to choose a direction.

If two capsule concepts both look promising, a free Steam capsule A/B test can help you compare how participants respond. Look at click intent and recognition together; a popular image that suggests the wrong genre may need another round of work.

After you choose a direction, recheck the smaller format. The title, central subject and strongest contrast should still be clear when the capsule appears alongside many other games.

Steam Capsule Studio questions

Are all Steam capsule formats and exports free in Indiely?

Yes. Every supported Steam store and library capsule format is free to design and export as PNG or ZIP without watermarks.

Why should I recompose my logo for the Small Capsule instead of scaling down the Main Capsule?

At 462 × 174 pixels, fine details and small titles become unreadable. Enlarging the game logo and simplifying the background in the small capsule keeps your title legible in search lists.

Does exporting from Capsule Studio mean Valve has approved the artwork?

No. The studio helps you arrange and export assets at the right dimensions, but you should always verify final uploads against current Steamworks graphical asset rules.

What makes a good Steam capsule?

A logo that stays readable at thumbnail size, one clear focal point, a genre that is obvious from the image alone and enough contrast to stand out on Steam's dark store pages. Our guide on optimizing your Steam capsule covers the common mistakes.
